Creation Of A Photo Quality 3D Cityscape Animation

This taken from the project overview done by Fabio Zungrone (who also worked on Diablo III, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm) and Anthony Eftekhari (a matte painter and concept artist with over six years’ experience on films, TV and video games.)

The main purpose of the project was the creation of a full photo like 3D cityscape animation. The city is also an old fantastical city. The city in this project was modeled in intricate detail, right down to the people that live and work there.

A lot of research and planning went into the project in order to make it as realistic as possible, kinda like something you might see in a feature film: aerial shots were studied, and movies and loads of photos were looked at in order to get the true feel.

Concept

Color studies were done initially to explore the lighting and mood for the shot.

Props modeling

Fabio and Anthony created loads of street level props to enable them to reuse and create variety in their buildings and streets.

Modeling Buildings

The buildings are iterated from just 10 models to keep the scene from appearing cluttered.

The Palace

They reused many of the buildings features and props to dress the larger modeled shapes of the palace.

Water

The water was created with a simple V-Ray shader which was then mixed with a ground shader; a black and white matte blended them  together.

People and More

They also did a simple rig on a basic human model and then created a basic walk cycle.

Assembling the Scene

This turned out to be a tricky step as we added all the individual elements manually as they did not want to spend time on a learning curve for software.

Lighting

A V-Ray area light was used for the sun and an HDRI map for the environment

The Camera

They then  positioned particular elements in the shot, to frame and to direct the viewer’s eye to the palace on the camera’s path in order to create a stronger composition.
