Black Sabbath (Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler), the world famous, multi-platinum rock group who were the pioneers of the Heavy Metal genre with their doom and gloom type sounds, fmixed with lyrical themes of the occult, addiction, war and nuclear apocalypse, will be featured in a terrifying 3D maze, “Black Sabbath: 13 3D” located at Universal Studios Hollywood’s premier Halloween Horror Nights event, which will begin on September 20th, 2013.

This brand new maze, which is based on the darkest lyrics from Black Sabbath’s biggest hits and it is the only attraction at Universal’s horror event that will incorporate 3D video. The maze also includes scenes that come from the band’s recently released Billboard #1 hit album, “13.” A nightmare-like surrounding of doom will “swallow” guests as they come in to “Black Sabbath: 13 3D” and travel past horrifying graveyards, madhouses and terrifying battlefields.

Ozzy Osbourne said that, “We were all really excited when Universal Studios Hollywood approached us about doing a 3D ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ maze based on our music, I’ve seen the drawings of what it will look like when it’s finished and it looks amazing. I can’t wait to walk through it on opening night in September.” reports that, guests will actually face “a “heart-stopping” Lucifer and his bride, blood-soaked dead bodies and bubbling pools of “radioactive water” while song’s inspired by “Luke’s Wall,” “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” “Electric Funeral” and — of course — “Black Sabbath” violently penetrate the confines of the maze at high volume.”

John Murdy, the creative director for Universal Studios in Hollywood remarked, “Very few bands can claim to have defined a genre of music but Black Sabbaths’ remarkable influence in the evolution of Heavy Metal will go down in history, Tony Iommi’s dark, iconic riffs, Ozzy Osbourne’s haunting vocals and Geezer Butler’s foreboding lyrics provide the perfect soundtrack for ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ and endless inspiration for our new haunted attraction ‘Black Sabbath 13 3D’.”

Black Sabbath 13 3D, Evil Dead and The Walking Dead are among the haunted houses that have been announced so far for Universal Studios Hollywood with many more to come prior to opening night, September 20, 2013.

Although not a huge fan of the intense horror stuff myself, it is interesting to note that 3D video is playing such a role in the entertainment industry. The scope for skilled 3D artists is magnificent.

Been to L.A., seen some of the sights and tech. I’m a bit confused when people say “3D” though – is it anaglyph (cyan-red), polarization, xograph, lenticular, holography or something in-between? Most recently we have some stereo video cameras on the market (and on the surface of Mars) and there’s the Kula Deeper for making digital stereo pairs with a DSLR for processing into anaglyphs… what is the authoring kit for the motion stuff comprised of, I wonder? I know there are “stereographers” on movie sets these days but the ins and outs of how that works is a mystery.
