Autodesk Fusion 360 – Using 3D Modeling To Create Guitars
Orphanage Guitars – a New Hampshire-based design company is leaning on its expertise in 3D modeling and music to create an entirely new business making custom wood guitars.
The custom guitars start with a 2D sketch and are transformed into 3D guitars with the use of Autodesk Fusion 360 software!
Watch this short video to listen to and have a look at these amazing 3D instruments:
Matthew Harris, the principal designer (Redpoint Studios) states: “We use Fusion 360 to develop the form of the guitar,” he went on to say “That software is really good at keeping those surfaces fluid and smooth and allowing for quick manipulation of them.”
Matthew along with his brother Jonathan got the concept for this new business when Autodesk contacted them since they were looking for new uses for their software.
Matthew even stated in an interview that, “without the help of the software, it would take “weeks if not months” to achieve the same results.”

Using the software as seen above the material and angles of the guitar can be checked and approved by the customer before being taken to the next stage of the process.
At the next stage (with software) the routing templates are dropped in after which it is taken to the wood carver to be carved out of the block of wood previously chosen by the owner.
These guitars sell for anywhere from $2 – $3,000 usd similar to the cost of a high end guitar on the market.
There is no where that 3D can’t go it would seem 🙂
